Google Moves AI Responsibility Team to Global Affairs

Google is transferring its roughly 90-person AI responsibility team from Google DeepMind to its global affairs organization, with the change set to take effect in early September, Quartz reports. Citing an internal email reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, Quartz reported that the transfer is due to be completed at the beginning of September.
The team evaluates Google's AI models for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear risks, and studies user behavior and the psychological effects of chatbots, according to Quartz. The reassignment places a frontier-model risk evaluation function outside the research lab responsible for developing Gemini models.
A Google spokesperson told Quartz: "Many teams across Google work on AI safety and responsibility, and by bringing our AI responsibility teams closer together we're strengthening their ability to inform safety for our models and products."
Independence and research access
Quartz reported that some members of the team raised concerns that the transfer could limit their independence and reduce access to the DeepMind researchers developing Gemini. Helen King, the Google DeepMind vice president who leads the responsibility group, wrote in the internal email that the group's focus on emerging and frontier responsible-AI topics would remain unchanged, Quartz reported.
King also wrote that external publication of the team's research "continues to be supported and important," according to Quartz. The report said she told staff their access to DeepMind, computing infrastructure, and staffing levels would be retained.

In a post, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that Demis Hassabis would become Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, while Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind's chief technology officer and Google's chief AI architect, would become senior vice president of Google DeepMind and report to him.
Quartz reported that human-resources and policy functions are also being moved from DeepMind into Google's central organization. Its reporting frames the responsibility-team transfer as part of an effort to integrate DeepMind more closely with the rest of Google.
