Microsoft Research introduces Universal Report Generation (UniRG), a reinforcement learning framework for medical image report generation; UniRG-CXR was trained on over 560,000 studies, 780,000 images, and 226,000 patients from more than 80 institutions and achieves state-of-the-art ReXrank leaderboard results as of 01/22/2026. UniRG optimizes composite clinical rewards and produces fewer clinically significant errors, but remains a research prototype not validated for clinical use.
