Reddit Communities Reveal Disorder Association Network

A 2026 study in Journal of Medical Internet Research by Evkoski et al analyzed 114 Reddit communities drawn from the 20,000 most active subreddits in 2022 to map associations among 49 disorders across nine ICD F-code categories. Using a bipartite configuration model with Bonferroni correction, they found a dense network (density=0.135), identified central disorders (PTSD, OCD, depersonalization-derealization), and reported only 13% edge overlap with ICD diagnostic relationships (Adjusted Rand Index=0.295).
Key Points
- 1Mapped 114 Reddit communities into a 49-disorder network spanning nine ICD categories.
- 2Shows divergence between lived-experience associations and formal ICD diagnostic groupings.
- 3Suggests clinicians and researchers should incorporate cross-community patterns when studying comorbidity and diagnosis.
Scoring Rationale
High methodological rigor and novel population-scale mapping, but limitations include platform specificity and observational cross-sectional data.
