Google announced Thursday new Universal Commerce Protocol capabilities for cart management, real-time catalog access, and loyalty program integration, enabling AI agents to browse, negotiate, and complete purchases for physical products. Ashish Gupta, vice president and general manager of merchant shopping, described UCP as an open standard to simplify online shopping; travel and other digital services are excluded for now.
