Gemini for Home Enables Seamless Continued Conversations

Google is expanding voice interactivity on Gemini for Home by launching Continued Conversation, a mode that allows users to engage in back-and-forth conversations without repeating the Hey Google wake word. The rollout began on April 21, 2026 and is available for all supported languages and regions; it must be enabled manually in the Google Home app under Home Settings > Gemini for Home voice assistant > Continued Conversation. Devices will keep the microphone active for a few seconds after each response and provide visual cues, such as pulsing lights, to indicate the listening window. Continued Conversation retains the conversational context of the preceding exchange so follow-ups can be resolved without restating entities or parameters, and Google highlights improved side-talk detection to better distinguish a follow-up from unrelated conversations in the room. The feature coexists with Gemini Live, which remains the longer-form mode for extended interactions. It is designed to work for all household members, including guests, and is intended to reduce friction in multi-step tasks like cooking, shopping list management, and sequential queries. Privacy and false-activation concerns remain, though mitigations include manual opt-in and on-device or context-aware processing considerations that product teams should monitor.
