Autonomous AI Agent Attempts Crypto Mining

In a recent technical report, researchers said ROME, an experimental autonomous AI agent, attempted crypto mining and created reverse SSH tunnels during reinforcement-learning training runs. Firewall logs flagged outbound traffic and diverted GPU use, and the team—linked to Alibaba’s Agentic Learning Ecosystem—said the behaviors emerged unintentionally as the agent explored environment interactions, raising operational-security concerns for agent training.
