Apple Begins China Apple Intelligence Rollout

In its July earnings call, Apple said it had begun rolling out an initial set of Apple Intelligence features in mainland China, while a fuller AI integration for Siri requires additional work. According to the South China Morning Post, the first features include the Clean Up photo-editing tool and are supported through partnerships with Alibaba and Baidu. Cook also warned that supply constraints and higher memory costs are affecting Apple's hardware business.
Apple has begun releasing an initial set of Apple Intelligence features in mainland China, but CEO Tim Cook told analysts that a fuller rollout of AI-enhanced Siri will take longer.
According to the South China Morning Post, the first China release includes Clean Up, Apple's photo-editing feature for removing unwanted objects from images. Cook said on Apple's earnings call: "We are working now through the roll-out of those, and there will be more work required down the road for Siri AI, but we are at the front end of that."
The South China Morning Post reports that Apple is working with Alibaba Group Holding and Baidu to support the China deployment. Digital Today similarly reported that Chinese regulators approved Apple Intelligence earlier in July and that the service is reaching China roughly two years after its initial introduction in other markets.
A staged release in a major handset market
The initial release gives Apple a limited set of generative AI capabilities in the world's largest smartphone market while Siri's more extensive AI functionality remains unavailable there. The South China Morning Post described the China rollout as occurring amid competition from domestic handset makers including Huawei and Xiaomi.
Apple reported revenue of $18.8 billion across mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau for the quarter ended June 27, a 22% year-over-year increase, according to the South China Morning Post. That figure was below the Wall Street estimate of $19.6 billion cited by the publication.
Globally, Apple reported $109.4 billion in quarterly revenue, up 16% year over year, and net income of $29.8 billion. MacRumors reported that iPhone revenue rose 22% to $54.3 billion, while Mac revenue rose 29% to $10.4 billion. Those results set June-quarter records for total revenue, earnings per share, and revenue in the iPhone, Mac, and Services segments, according to MacRumors.
Siri remains the open implementation question
Cook's comments distinguish between availability of selected Apple Intelligence features and the wider Siri integration that Apple has presented as part of its AI software work. The reporting does not provide a date for expanded Siri AI availability in China.
For ML and product teams, the staged deployment illustrates a recurring constraint in cross-border AI products: model capabilities alone do not determine launch timing. Comparable launches can require local service partners, regulatory approval, and market-specific operational integration before features reach users. That is particularly consequential for assistant products, where cloud inference, data handling, tool access, and localized content rules can be more tightly coupled than in a discrete image-editing feature.
Hardware constraints add pressure
The earnings call also highlighted supply-chain issues alongside the AI rollout. MacRumors reported that Cook said supply constraints would have a larger revenue impact in the September quarter and would affect iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The publication also reported that Cook attributed June price increases for Macs and iPads to sharp increases in memory costs.
The two developments are separate, but they arrive in the same reporting period: Apple is expanding AI software availability in China while describing tighter availability for components used across its hardware portfolio. For the broader device-AI market, similar conditions can complicate the economics of feature-led upgrade cycles, particularly when higher-memory configurations are increasingly relevant to on-device AI workloads.
Key Points
- 1Apple is releasing initial Apple Intelligence features in China, while Cook said broader Siri AI integration requires additional work.
- 2Alibaba and Baidu are reported partners for the China deployment, underscoring how localized AI services can require domestic infrastructure relationships.
- 3Rising memory prices and reported September supply constraints add hardware pressure as device makers expand AI features and memory-intensive workloads.
Scoring Rationale
Apple Intelligence reaching China is a notable deployment development in the world's largest smartphone market, with direct relevance to consumer AI product localization and platform partnerships. The incomplete Siri rollout limits the immediate technical scope, but the reported supply and memory constraints also matter for teams tracking device-AI economics.
