American Airlines Reduces Contrails Using AI Forecasts

American Airlines and Google said Thursday they reduced the climate impact of a January–May 2025 transatlantic trial by using an AI-based contrail forecasting tool in flight planning. The study covered 2,400 U.S.–Europe flights (half offered avoidance options) and found that of the 112 flights that took avoidance options, contrails fell 62% and estimated warming from those flights fell about 69%.
Key Points
- 1Demonstrates 62% fewer contrails on 112 avoided-route flights in a 2,400-flight trial
- 2Indicates about 69% estimated reduction in climatological warming from those avoided-route flights
- 3Enables airlines to integrate AI contrail forecasts into dispatch systems with minimal fuel penalty
Scoring Rationale
High novelty and industry relevance from official trial, limited by small subset of flights and need for broader trials.
