AI model rivalry expands into defense sector

South Korea is running a national AI foundation model project with four competing consortiums - SK Telecom (A.X K1), LG AI Research, Upstage, and Motif Technologies - vying for designation ahead of an August 2026 final evaluation. SK Telecom plans to deliver a lightweight, speed-optimized variant of A.X K1 trained on defense-specific data. On June 10, Naver Cloud entered the field with a detailed strategy presentation in Daejeon. Per Seoul Economic Daily, the company unveiled plans for dedicated military AI data centers: a central facility integrating Army, Navy, Air Force, and Joint Chiefs of Staff data, paired with edge data centers that can operate independently when communications are cut off - at front lines, on ships, and at mobile command posts. Its HyperCLOVA X OMNI model is designed to fuse battlefield data across text, voice, video, and maps into a unified situational picture for commanders. Naver Cloud executive director Yoo Kyung-bum said the model "can understand diverse battlefield data as a single integrated situation" and "convert this into intelligence that commanders can understand."

The Korea Institute for Defense Analyses (KIDA) and the National Information Society Agency (NIA) signed a cooperation MOU in May 2026, jointly committing to a "public-defense hybrid AI transformation strategy," according to UPI/Asia Today. Plans include expanding KIDA's AI office into a Defense AI Policy Center coordinating across the Defense Ministry and Ministry of Science and ICT.
