Anthropic Will Pay 1,000 People $85,000 a Year to Bring Claude to Nonprofits

On June 11, Anthropic committed $150 million to Claude Corps, a fellowship that will train 1,000 early-career people, pay them a full salary plus benefits, and place them inside US nonprofits for a year. Applications for the first 100-person cohort close July 17, and the company funding it is now valued at nearly a trillion dollars.

If you are over 18, have less than two years of full-time work experience, and are willing to relocate, Anthropic would like to pay you $85,000 a year. The catch is that you would not be working at Anthropic. You would be working at a food bank in Conroe, Texas, or a refugee resettlement office, or a YMCA in Charlotte, showing the staff there how to use Claude.

Anthropic announced the program, called Claude Corps, on June 11. It is a national fellowship that will train 1,000 people to use AI well, place them full-time and in person inside nonprofits across the country for 12 months, and cover their salary. The company is putting an initial $150 million behind it.

The pitch is generous. It is also coming from a company valued at 965 billion dollars, whose own technology is rewriting the entry-level job market that these same early-career workers are trying to break into. The same company is paying to ease a disruption it helped set in motion.

A Salaried Job, Not a Volunteer Gig

Claude Corps pays a real salary for a full year. It is not an internship, and it is not volunteering.

The official employer is CodePath, a nonprofit that Anthropic describes as the largest provider of collegiate computer science education in the country. CodePath, not Anthropic, signs the paychecks and runs the day-to-day program.

Here is what a fellow gets:

  • A full annual salary of $85,000 plus benefits for the 12-month placement
  • An intensive training course, built by Anthropic and CodePath, on using Claude inside a nonprofit before the placement begins
  • Five hours of structured training every week during the fellowship, with the rest of the time spent working for the host organization
  • A CodePath mentor, office hours with Anthropic, and a manager at the host nonprofit
  • A large Claude usage budget to actually build things
  • Relocation support, provided as needed, if you have to move for the placement

The work is in person. Fellows are placed at a single host organization and are expected to move if they do not already live nearby, with relocation support available when they do. The job is to sit inside a mission-driven team that has never had an AI specialist and help them put Claude to work. Anthropic describes that work broadly, as data analysis, building tools and workflows, and supporting day-to-day operations. In practice it tends to be the document drafting, data cleanup, and small internal tools a ten-person nonprofit could never afford to commission.

The Eligibility Bar Is Low. The Deadline Is Not.

If you are early in a data or software career, the eligibility bar is the surprising part.

The eligibility bar is deliberately wide. Anthropic says anyone over 18 with under two years of full-time work experience can apply, regardless of their degree or field of study. The only firm requirements are that you are authorized to work in the US, that you are comfortable working with Claude, and that you are willing to move for the placement.

There is no computer science degree requirement. There is no GPA cutoff. The program is aimed squarely at people at the very start of their working lives, which is the same group most exposed to AI in the job market.

Both fellows and host nonprofits apply through Anthropic's Claude Corps page, on separate tracks. If you want to be a fellow, use the fellow track, not the host-organization one. The program rolls out in three cohorts.

All three cohorts are open now. Only the first carries a fixed deadline, July 17; the other two accept applications on a rolling basis until they fill. The first cohort is also the smallest and the most competitive, so the October start is the one with real urgency.

The 150 Million Dollar Question: Who Pays for the Nonprofits

Anthropic's money does more than cover salaries.

The company says at least 400 nonprofits will host a fellow over the program's first year. Each host organization also receives a $10,000 grant plus free credits to run Claude, so the software cost does not land on the nonprofit itself.

Three organizations run the program, and the split is worth understanding:

  • Anthropic funds it, sets the strategy, and provides the Claude expertise.
  • CodePath is the employer of record and runs the fellowship programming.
  • Social Finance, a nonprofit and registered investment advisor, handles measurement and is building a longer-term financial vehicle so the program can outlast the first round of funding.

The host list is broad and already named. Confirmed organizations include the International Rescue Committee, Goodwill Industries International, RAINN, Code for America, Year Up United, Braven, StriveTogether, the YMCA of Greater Charlotte, and the Montgomery County Food Bank in Conroe, Texas. Anthropic also says it plans to open-source the program's core technology and to repeat the model in other countries later.

Why a 965 Billion Dollar Company Is Funding This

The official reason is responsibility. In its announcement, Anthropic argued that the companies building AI owe something to the people the technology displaces.

The companies building this technology have a responsibility to make sure the benefits are fully realized and widely shared, and to invest directly in the workers absorbing the change.

That framing is not abstract for Anthropic. The company has spent the past year publishing its own research on how AI is changing work, including an analysis that mapped which jobs AI is most likely to replace. Its leadership has spoken openly about AI eliminating a large share of entry-level white-collar jobs. Claude Corps targets exactly the group most exposed to that shift: people with less than two years of experience.

There is also a business logic. Nonprofits are a large, under-served market that has been slow to adopt AI. Putting a trained Claude user inside 1,000 of them, at no cost to the organization, seeds habits, case studies, and goodwill in a sector that rarely shows up in enterprise sales pipelines. The fellowship is also a sales channel, the most personal kind there is.

And the timing is loud. Anthropic recently overtook OpenAI at a $965 billion valuation and, Fortune reports, has confidentially filed for an IPO. A program that pays 1,000 young people to do visible social good is a useful thing to have on the record as that scrutiny grows.

The Other Side

Not everyone reads a near-trillion-dollar company funding worker retraining as straightforwardly good.

Bella DeVaan, director of the Charity Reform Initiative at the Institute for Policy Studies, put the objection bluntly to Fortune.

The fox can't guard the henhouse. They can't be responsible for their own regulation or for their own definition of what their altruistic mandate is.

Her argument is about who sets the terms. When the company reshaping the economy is also the one funding, measuring, and publicizing the response, it controls the story: which harms count, which fixes matter, and whether what it did was enough. DeVaan's view is that defining the public good is a job for public authorities, not for a private company that also has a product to sell.

There is a sharper version of the critique. Anthropic both helps automate entry-level work and now offers a small number of early-career workers an $85,000 lifeline. One thousand fellowships is real money and real opportunity. It is also tiny next to the scale of the labor shift the same company forecasts.

There is a practical caution here too, for anyone thinking of applying. Claude Corps is a fixed 12-month term, with no promised job at Anthropic or the host when it ends. Treat it as a paid year of real experience, not a hiring pipeline.

None of this makes the program insincere. It means the people it is built to help have reason to read the fine print, and to ask what happens to all the other early-career workers who do not land one of the 1,000 spots.

The Bottom Line

Strip away the framing and the offer is concrete. Anthropic will pay 1,000 people a real salary for a year to embed inside nonprofits and make AI useful there. For an early-career data scientist who wants hands-on experience and does not mind relocating, it is one of the better-paid entry points into applied AI available right now.

The harder question is the one the program cannot answer about itself. A company worth nearly a trillion dollars is using a sliver of that wealth to soften the edges of a transition it is helping to drive, and it is also the one keeping score on whether that worked.

The first 100 spots close on July 17. Whether Claude Corps becomes a genuine bridge for the workers AI is displacing, or a well-funded way to be seen building one, comes down to a question nobody can answer yet: what happens to these 1,000 people, and the nonprofits they leave behind, after the year is up.
