Vietnam Mathematicians Launch Domestic PhD Supervision Program

Six internationally acclaimed Vietnamese mathematicians on March 6 committed to returning regularly to Vietnam to co-supervise doctoral students under Converging Scholars, a VIASM initiative announced by Fields Medalist Ngo Bao Chau. Each will spend two to three months per year over an initial three-year period teaching and co-supervising at the University of Science, with VIEF-funded tuition waivers and stipends up to VND16.7 million (US$637) monthly. The program aims to retain IMO-caliber talent and build domestic research capacity.
Key Points
- 1Deploy six overseas Vietnamese mathematicians to co-supervise doctoral candidates two to three months yearly
- 2Address talent drain by training IMO-caliber students domestically to create research leaders
- 3Provide funded PhD positions with stipends, waivers, conference and research travel support via VIEF
Scoring Rationale
Official, funded initiative mobilizes top Vietnamese mathematicians to retain talent; limited immediate global impact beyond national research capacity.
