TravelAI Acquires Sonder Brand From Bankruptcy

TravelAI acquired rights and interests in Sonder's trademarks and more than 70 domain names through a Canadian court-approved bankruptcy sale, then relaunched Sonder.com on July 27 as a curated affiliate guide. The transaction closed July 13 and excluded Sonder's properties, leases, inventory, staff and operating business; Skift reports that the price remains under seal.
TravelAI has acquired rights and interests in the Sonder trademark portfolio and more than 70 domain names through a Canadian court-approved bankruptcy sale. It relaunched Sonder.com on July 27 as a curated travel-discovery and affiliate-booking site, not as a revival of Sonder's former lodging operation.
TravelAI's announcement says UpNext Ventures, which operates as TravelAI, acquired the Canadian estates' rights and interests in the SONDER word mark, more than 50 global trademark registrations and domains including Sonder.com. The Superior Court of Québec approved the sale on July 6, 2026, and the transaction closed on July 13.
A brand sale, not a hotel portfolio
The transaction did not include Sonder's properties, leases, inventory, staff, reservation system or operating business. It was completed with the bankruptcy trustee for Sonder Canada Inc. and Hospitalité Sonder Canada Inc., and does not involve Sonder Holdings Inc. or its securities, according to TravelAI.
That distinction matters for travelers and the industry. The former Sonder managed accommodation inventory. The relaunched Sonder.com is a discovery layer that curates apartment-style homes, boutique hotels and other urban stays from TravelAI's distribution partners. TravelAI earns referral commissions when users book through those partners, according to Skift.
The old Sonder's collapse followed Marriott International's termination of their licensing agreement in November 2025. Sonder's parent then announced a wind-down, while its U.S. business entered Chapter 7 liquidation and the Canadian entities filed for bankruptcy.
What TravelAI is buying
TravelAI is betting that Sonder's name, domains and accumulated search demand can become a top-of-funnel asset for its affiliate network. Skift reports that the purchase price remains under seal and that TravelAI is targeting $100 million in gross booking value within 12 months for the revived brand. That is a company target, not a reported result.
The company says the new site will use preference data and AI-enabled personalization to narrow accommodation choices. Its broader portfolio includes more than 500 travel brands, according to Skift and PhocusWire, which gives TravelAI a large distribution surface but does not make the new Sonder an accommodation operator.
For travel-data teams, the transaction illustrates a different use of AI from property operations. The technical work shifts toward ranking partner inventory, remembering user preferences, resolving identities across sessions and attributing bookings to external suppliers. Those systems still need accurate availability, clear operator names and careful separation between editorial ranking and paid referral economics.
The relaunch therefore preserves the Sonder brand while changing the business behind it. Travelers see a familiar domain, but bookings are now routed through a TravelAI affiliate guide rather than the former Sonder lodging network.
Key Points
- 1TravelAI acquired rights and interests in Sonder trademarks and more than 70 domains, not the former company's lodging operations or staff.
- 2The court approved the sale July 6 and the transaction closed July 13; Sonder.com relaunched July 27 as a curated affiliate guide.
- 3Skift reports a $100 million 12-month gross-booking-value target, which is a company projection rather than a measured result.
Scoring Rationale
The court-approved brand and domain acquisition is a notable travel-technology transaction with a concrete AI-personalization and affiliate-distribution model. It does not restore Sonder's former operating business and remains more commercially significant than technically novel.
