Openreach Detects Water Leaks Using Fiber

Openreach says a recent pilot with Affinity Water and Lightsonic used Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) on its fiber network to detect subterranean water-pipe leaks. Over three months across five locations near London monitoring about 650 km of pipes, the system identified more than 100 leaks, saving an estimated 2 million liters of water per day and potentially scaling nationwide.
Scoring Rationale
Pilot demonstrates measurable water savings and operational value, but limited novelty and industry-specific scope reduces broader impact.
