OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT Ads in India

OpenAI has begun showing advertisements to a segment of ChatGPT users in India, its second-largest market, Mint reported on August 27. Dave Dugan, OpenAI's vice president and head of global ads solutions, told Mint that ads are expected on roughly one in five Indian user queries, while non-commercial queries generally will not receive them. Free and Go users are eligible, while paid and education tiers remain ad-free.
OpenAI has started showing advertisements to a segment of ChatGPT users in India, Mint reported on August 27, extending an ads pilot that began in the United States in February. The rollout arrives in OpenAI's second-largest market and during India's festival shopping season, according to Mint.
Dave Dugan, OpenAI's vice president and head of global ads solutions, told Mint that the company expects advertisements to appear on about one in five ChatGPT queries in India. He said nearly 80% of queries without product or commercial intent would not receive ads, including on the free tier. Mint reported that WPP and Omnicom are OpenAI's first advertising partners in India and that advertisers can submit campaigns starting at Rs 725 per day.
How ChatGPT ads are structured
OpenAI's help documentation states that ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts do not receive ads. The company also states that accounts identified as belonging to people under 18 do not receive ads.
According to OpenAI, advertisements appear below the end of a response, are labeled as sponsored, and are visually separated from the model output. OpenAI states that ads run on systems separate from its chat model and that advertisers cannot shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT responses. Dugan told Mint that the company had prioritized preventing advertisements from influencing organic answers, and vice versa.
OpenAI's published FAQ says its ad system selects placements using expected relevance and outcomes. Its advertiser site describes campaign creation, budgeting, bulk ad-detail uploads, measurement, and optimization through Ads Manager.
A new distribution channel for AI-native advertising
Mint describes OpenAI as the first major generative AI platform to roll out advertisements at full scale in India. The publication noted that Google announced advertising experiments in Gemini-powered generative AI results in May, while Anthropic had said Claude would remain ad-free.
For ML and product teams, the rollout creates a practical test case for advertising within a conversational interface rather than a conventional search-results page. Systems of this kind require a clear separation between model responses, ranking logic, sponsored content, and user controls. Across comparable AI products, practitioner scrutiny commonly centers on whether relevance optimization preserves response quality, privacy boundaries, and transparent labeling, especially when conversational context can contain more detail than a keyword query.
OpenAI's August 11 update on its ads announcement said ChatGPT Ads had launched in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea, and that expansion to additional markets would continue during 2026.
Key Points
- 1OpenAI has extended ChatGPT advertising to India, creating a large new conversational-ad inventory channel during the country's festival shopping season.
- 2Mint reports ads may appear on roughly 20% of Indian queries, concentrating placements on product and commercially oriented interactions.
- 3Comparable conversational advertising systems place unusual importance on separating model output, sponsored ranking, privacy controls, and transparent ad labeling.
Scoring Rationale
ChatGPT advertising in India expands a consequential product and monetization model into one of OpenAI's largest markets. It matters to AI product, ranking, privacy, and measurement teams evaluating how sponsored content can coexist with conversational model outputs.
