OpenAI Creates $180 Billion Foundation For Oversight

OpenAI restructured in October 2024, converting its nonprofit into the OpenAI Foundation with a 26% stake valued at about $180 billion, while the for-profit arm became a public-benefit corporation. The foundation has donated roughly $40.5 million to over 200 community nonprofits, but critics question its ability to enforce safety oversight amid Pentagon contracts, ad tests, executive departures, and a Feb. 19 $7.5 million multinational safety grant.
