Music Publishers Sue Anthropic Over Piracy Allegations

Universal Music Group, Concord and other major publishers filed a federal copyright infringement lawsuit against Anthropic, alleging it torrented unauthorized copies of songs and sheet music to build a training library for its Claude chatbot. The publishers say the complaint covers more than 20,000 songs, including 700 named works, and seek potential statutory damages exceeding $3 billion. The filing expands an earlier 2023 suit alleging similar copyright violations.
Scoring Rationale
High legal and industry impact due to large-scale copyright claims; limited novelty as it expands a 2023 suit.
