Microsoft Hosts Person County Data Center Meeting

The bottleneck for large-scale AI compute expansion is increasingly not capital or hardware but siting: land-use approvals, utility interconnects, water rights, and community acceptance. Person County is one of many cases where these constraints are playing out in public. Practitioners and infrastructure teams planning capacity should factor in the 12-to-36-month permitting cycles now emerging around large AI data center builds.

Microsoft hosted a community meeting for neighbors of its planned Person County, North Carolina data center campus on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, inviting residents to share questions and concerns. The site spans approximately 1,385 acres near Roxboro and was first disclosed when Microsoft purchased the land in late 2024. WRAL reports Microsoft officials were present to record community feedback. According to Microsoft's local project blog, the company has committed to paying its own way on utility upgrades, minimizing water use, creating local jobs, and contributing to the county's tax base.

The Assembly NC reported earlier in 2026 that the project's early stages involved nondisclosure agreements that limited public information. Community concerns raised at prior meetings included infrastructure impacts, electricity pricing, and environmental footprint. Data Center Dynamics noted Microsoft is still in early permitting phases with site preparation - soil sampling, surveying, road closures - underway.
