MARVEL Selects Five Teams For Demonstrations

Idaho National Laboratory on Dec. 4 selected five commercial teams — including Amazon Web Services, GE Vernova, Radiation Detection Technologies, a DCX USA–Arizona State University consortium, and a NOV/Shepherd/ConocoPhillips group — to potentially demonstrate advanced applications at its MARVEL 85-kWth/20-kWe liquid-metal-cooled microreactor testbed. Initial experiments will target AI data-center electrical loads, industrial water-treatment decarbonization, and autonomous controls; final agreements are expected in 2026 ahead of operations in late 2027–early 2028.
Key Points
- 1Selects five commercial teams including AWS, GE Vernova, and industry consortia to access MARVEL
- 2Targets AI data-center loads, industrial water-treatment decarbonization, and autonomous controls to de-risk integration
- 3Provides experimental data and validation opportunities for practitioners before commercial microreactor deployment
Scoring Rationale
Official DOE/INL selection and novel use cases provide high relevance, but experimental scale and delayed operations limit immediate industry impact.
