Manulife expands Microsoft partnership for enterprise AI governance

Manulife said it has adopted Microsoft 365 E7 Frontier Suite capabilities and will expand Microsoft 365 Copilot to more than 30,000 employees. The insurer also plans to deploy Microsoft Agent 365 as a registry and control plane for observing, governing and securing AI agents across the company.

The announcement describes Microsoft as a foundational partner in Manulife's global enterprise AI platform, which is currently in pilot. Microsoft Azure and Microsoft Foundry provide development, fine-tuning and monitoring components, while Agent 365 is intended to give teams a common inventory and management interface as agent use expands. Manulife said it already has AI-powered agents and workflows in production, with additional deployments planned.

The companies identified several existing uses of Microsoft technology inside Manulife. These include an advisor sales tool, John Hancock's Quick Quote underwriting-support product and generative AI systems that Manulife says support more than 110 million customer calls a year across North America.

Manulife also reported that developers using assisted and autonomous AI capabilities increased productivity by 30%. The company said it expects its AI initiatives to generate more than $1 billion in enterprise value by 2027, after $300 million achieved by the end of 2025. Those performance and value figures are company-reported, and the 2027 target is forward-looking rather than an independently verified outcome.

For enterprise AI teams, the notable design choice is the attempt to pair broader agent and Copilot adoption with a centralized registry, monitoring and policy layer. That can make ownership, access and runtime activity easier to track than a collection of isolated deployments.

The announcement does not provide independent measurements of Agent 365's effectiveness inside Manulife, so the practical result will depend on how consistently the insurer registers agents, connects telemetry and enforces controls across business units. The agreement nevertheless shows a large financial-services company treating agent governance as part of deployment infrastructure rather than a separate review step.
