Khan TED Institute Reimagines Higher Education for AI Age

TED, Khan Academy and ETS announced the formation of the Khan TED Institute at TED2026 in Vancouver, a nonprofit higher education initiative built for the AI era. The collaboration pairs Khan Academy's learning platform, TED's curator community and ETS's assessment expertise to deliver competency-based pathways that combine foundational academics, applied AI fluency and communication skills. Applications are expected to open in 12 to 18 months.

The inaugural curriculum organizes learning around three pillars and advances students by verified competency rather than seat time. Key components include:

ETS's measurement capability is central because large-scale, defensible competency validation remains the gating factor for alternative credentials. Khan Academy supplies scalable pedagogy and distribution, while TED supplies narrative reach and employer-facing storytelling. For practitioners this signals growing demand for robust assessment design, curriculum-to-employer alignment, and tooling that supports AI-assisted learning and project-based evaluation.
