Shanwick is a major oceanic flight corridor managed by NATS. How the trial works
New Scientist reports that, beginning later in 2026, controllers in Shanwick will use Google-generated atmospheric forecasts to advise aircraft on altitude changes intended to avoid regions where persistent warming contrails are likely. The publication reports that adjustments may be as large as 2,000 feet, or about 600 meters, and that the initial intervention windows will focus on evening and nighttime flights.
Google states that its forecasts are intended to identify contrail-sensitive regions while keeping changes within normal flight operations. The trial uses standard air traffic control communication procedures, according to Corporate Jet Investor.
The project is not limited to scheduled commercial carriers. Google technical lead Paul Hodgson told Corporate Jet Investor that private aviation will be part of the trial and that aircraft passing through Shanwick could be deviated for contrail avoidance or other reasons during test windows.

Google reports it has previously worked with airlines, air-navigation providers and flight-planning software providers on targeted contrail-avoidance operations.
