Digital Platforms Improve Chronic Disease Self-Management

A scoping review published in JMIR Mhealth Uhealth (2026) by Al Mahmud et al. analyzed 69 digital health platforms developed between January 2013 and November 2024 supporting management of 20 chronic diseases. Most platforms were mobile or web-mobile hybrids and 77% of studies reported improved patient quality of life and self-management; however, most evaluations were short-term pilots (n=42) with high dropout rates, leaving long-term outcomes uncertain.
Key Points
- 1Identified 69 digital health platforms spanning 20 chronic diseases, primarily mobile or web-mobile hybrids.
- 2Reported benefits: 77% of studies showed improved patient quality of life and self-management outcomes.
- 3Highlight limited long-term evidence: most studies were short-term pilots (n=42) with high dropout rates.
Scoring Rationale
Comprehensive scoping review with peer-reviewed evidence; limited novelty and short-term, small-sample studies constrain long-term generalizability.
