Croatian Language Gains Three New Words

The Dr. Ivan Šreter Awards in Lipik selected three new Croatian words on 14 March 2026, choosing presudnik, dohvatnica and narubno from 412 proposals by 191 contributors. Organized by magazine Jezik and the Dr. Ivan Šreter Foundation for its 20th anniversary, judges evaluated entries for correctness, clarity and usefulness as alternatives to foreign loanwords. The winners received €600, €400 and €200 respectively.
Key Points
- 1Select three vetted Croatian neologisms—presudnik, dohvatnica, narubno—chosen from 412 submissions.
- 2Promote native alternatives to loanwords to strengthen linguistic clarity and national cultural identity.
- 3Urge media, educators, and developers to adopt standardized Croatian terms in technology and education.
Scoring Rationale
Local official award adds credible linguistic additions, but impact remains nationally focused and limited for broader technological fields.
