Clemson Researchers Build Robots Using Centripetal Force

Phanindra Tallapragada and his Clemson University team are developing robots that use an unbalanced spinning mass to generate motion, demonstrated in a jumping wheel, fish-like swimmer, and pipe crawler. Supported by a three-year National Science Foundation grant, they are extending the approach toward insectlike flying robots and propose applications in inspection, environmental monitoring, and planetary exploration.
Scoring Rationale
Innovative, NSF-supported laboratory demonstrations show multi-modal potential, but early-stage prototypes and limited technical detail constrain immediate applicability.
