Cisco Consortium Documents Agentic AI Cybersecurity Skills Shift

Analysis of Cornerstone and Indeed recruitment data found that 28.5% of G7 cybersecurity job postings required AI skills from October 2025 through March 2026, compared with 14.2% in the comparable prior-year period, according to the Consortium's report.

Demand rises as junior hiring lags
Cybersecurity job demand across G7 economies grew 9.5% in the six months ending March 2026, up from 6.8% in the preceding six-month period, according to reporting by HR Today and Digit.fyi. The same reporting found a substantial difference by seniority: senior-titled postings grew 65.0%, while junior-titled postings grew 5.9%.
The Consortium's surveyed leaders identified hands-on experience with AI agents, technical cybersecurity depth, and human skills as the hardest capabilities to find among junior candidates, HR Today reported. In the United States, postings requiring AI skills carried a 14.9% median salary premium over those that did not require them.
These figures describe job-posting demand rather than a direct measure of deployed AI systems or individual worker proficiency. Still, comparable enterprise technology transitions commonly increase demand for people who can validate automated outputs, investigate exceptions, and connect technical findings to operational decisions, rather than only operate repetitive workflows.
From model building to supervision
According to the report, the relevant skill mix is shifting from building AI models toward "directing and verifying" agentic systems. Digit.fyi reported that AI systems are beginning to handle high-volume SOC tasks including alert triage, threat-intelligence correlation, and standard decision-tree workflows. The report frames the resulting role change as a shift from manual processing toward analysis and decision-making.
That distinction is material for security teams adopting LLM-based agents. Automating a triage or enrichment step does not remove the need to assess false positives, preserve evidence, understand adversarial manipulation, and approve consequential response actions. In similar automation programs, reliable evaluation criteria, audit trails, identity controls, and escalation paths become central engineering concerns.
Investment imbalance
The report also identifies a potential gap between technology investment and workforce preparation. A Cisco survey cited by Digit.fyi found that more than one-third of cybersecurity leaders intended to invest in AI-powered security capabilities over the next one to two years, while 25% prioritized investment in people.
The Consortium includes Accenture, Cisco, Cornerstone, Eightfold AI, Google, IBM, Indeed, Intel, Microsoft, Pearson, and SAP, Network World reported. Its findings arrive amid a reported global shortage of more than 4.8 million cybersecurity professionals, according to Digit.fyi.
