China Strengthens Enforcement Against Technology Theft
Liu Taizong, deputy director-general of China’s top prosecutorial agency, said on Tuesday prosecutors nationwide are increasing criminal cases against commercial espionage and technology leaks. Authorities handled more than 1,200 trade-secret infringement cases from 2021–2024 and 232 cases in the first 11 months of 2025, targeting sectors including artificial intelligence, biomanufacturing and energy. The move follows prosecutions such as the 14-person Huawei HiSilicon-related case and raises questions about equal IP protections for foreign firms.
Key Points
- 1Increase prosecutions: prosecutors handled 1,200+ cases 2021–2024, 232 cases in first 11 months 2025
- 2Target strategic sectors: enforcement focuses on AI, biomanufacturing and energy to curb tech leakage
- 3Implication for foreign firms: raises concerns about equal IP protection and geopolitical tensions
Scoring Rationale
Official statistics and sector focus increase credibility, but limited novelty and state-controlled sourcing constrain broader impact.
