What Samsung could provide
Samsung manufactures both logic chips and the high-bandwidth memory used by many AI accelerators. SiliconANGLE noted that Samsung offers established 4-nanometer manufacturing as well as its newer SF2P 2-nanometer process for data-center chips, but also said the reporting did not identify which process an Anthropic design might use. TrendForce separately cited Yonhap as reporting that 2-nanometer manufacturing and advanced packaging were under consideration. Those details remain reported possibilities, not a disclosed design.
Secondary reports also point to Anthropic's hiring of Clive Chan, who previously worked on OpenAI's custom-chip program, as evidence of growing internal interest in silicon. A hire alone does not establish that a chip has entered detailed design, testing or production.
Why frontier labs want custom silicon
A workload-specific accelerator can offer tighter control over power efficiency, supply and cost than a strategy built entirely around general-purpose GPUs. OpenAI's recent Broadcom collaboration on its Jalapeño inference processor illustrates the same industry direction, while Amazon and Google already offer custom accelerators through their cloud platforms.
