WWF-India Demonstrates Forest Fire Prediction System
WWF-India, in partnership with Microsoft, demonstrated a tech-driven forest fire prediction system for Hosur Forest Division on Feb. 14, 2026, showcasing models trained on roughly 13 years of historical geospatial, topographic, climatic and anthropogenic data. The programme used machine learning and deep-learning to produce susceptibility maps, an interactive dashboard, and trained more than 70 frontline staff to strengthen early warning and preparedness.
Key Points
- 1Develops ML and deep-learning models on 13-year geospatial dataset to predict forest fire hotspots
- 2Identifies shifting hotspots including new, sporadic, oscillating hotspots and an oscillating cold-spot in 2025
- 3Provides interactive dashboard and early-warning tools to improve preparedness and long-term conservation planning
Scoring Rationale
Applied ML and official pilot across multiple states drove impact; limited novelty given incremental, localized deployment.
