Carscoops reported that 64 citations were associated with tow-away zones, while 13 involved meters and nine involved double parking. InsideEVs reported 63 tow-away-zone citations, an apparent discrepancy among secondary accounts of the city-record analysis.
The largest reported individual citation was $519, issued after a Waymo Jaguar I-Pace was parked in a disabled space on September 11, 2024, according to Carscoops and InsideEVs. Carscoops also reported an incident in January 2025 in which a Waymo vehicle was towed after stopping partly across an active crossing.
How Austin enforces citations
Austin issues parking citations to the registered vehicle owner rather than to a driver. Carscoops reported that a Waymo spokesperson said, "We do not expect different treatment [in regard] to ticketing."
InsideEVs separately reported that a spokesperson said, "Waymo reviews all received citations and may engage with the court to address and resolve them, including contesting cases on their merit if we believe they were issued erroneously." The outlet reported that two cases had been dismissed through plea bargains.
The dollar amount is small relative to Austin's overall parking enforcement revenue. Planetizen, citing the Journal's reporting, said Austin collected $6.3 million in parking fines in fiscal 2025. But the concentration of citations around curb access is operationally relevant because autonomous vehicles cannot rely on an onboard driver to relocate a vehicle when a pickup, drop-off, or wait becomes noncompliant.
Curb management remains a robotaxi constraint
The original article by Mario Herger argues that cities have not created enough dedicated pickup-and-drop-off areas for robotaxi riders, particularly when passengers need accessible, close-by curb access. That is an interpretation of the infrastructure problem rather than a finding from Austin's citation records.
