UVA Researchers Receive $4.7M Grant For Automated Insulin

Heman Shakeri and colleagues at the University of Virginia and University of Colorado received a joint $3.9 million grant plus $800,000 in-kind, totaling about $4.7 million, funded by Breakthrough T1D and the Helmsley Trust to develop next-generation fully closed-loop insulin delivery. The project will combine UVA adaptive machine-learning algorithms with ultra-rapid-acting insulin across clinical trials at UVA, the Barbara Davis Center, and UCSF.
Scoring Rationale
Significant multimillion-dollar grant funds novel adaptive closed-loop research; strength is credibility and clinical scope, limitation is focused diabetes vertical.
