Tokyo Researchers Link Insulin Resistance To Cancer

University of Tokyo researchers published in Nature Communications on February 15 that insulin resistance is a risk factor for 12 cancer types, based on AI-IR applied to about 500,000 UK Biobank participants. AI-IR, trained on nine routine clinical parameters and validated in US and Taiwan cohorts, outperformed BMI and metabolic syndrome markers. The tool enables feasible population-level screening using standard health checkup data.
Key Points
- 1Demonstrates insulin resistance associates with twelve cancer types using AI-IR on ~500,000 UK Biobank participants
- 2Validates AI-IR—nine routine clinical parameters—outperforming BMI and metabolic criteria for predicting insulin resistance
- 3Enables feasible population-level screening from routine checkups, informing epidemiology and targeted prevention strategies
Scoring Rationale
Strong population-scale evidence with peer-reviewed validation and cross-cohort replication; limited transformative novelty relative to prior hypotheses.
