Telecom Centre Signs MoU With IIT Kanpur

The Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), technical arm of India's Department of Telecommunications, signed a memorandum of understanding with IIT Kanpur on 8 January to collaborate on advanced telecom research and global standardisation activities. The agreement focuses on 6G, AI in telecom, non-terrestrial networks, IoT, digital twins, metaverse and quantum communication, and aims to develop India-specific standards and testing frameworks. It also seeks to boost India's participation in ITU, 3GPP and other global forums, advancing Atmanirbhar Bharat in telecom.
Key Points
- 1Establishes MoU between TEC and IIT Kanpur for joint telecom research and global standards collaboration
- 2Targets emerging areas—6G, AI in telecom, NTNs, IoT, digital twins, metaverse, and quantum communication
- 3Enables India-specific standards and testing frameworks to bolster Atmanirbhar Bharat and secure domestic infrastructure
Scoring Rationale
Official government–academic MoU offers broad strategic and industry-level impact; novelty limited to a partnership announcement without technical deliverables.
