The program connects research instruction with Seoul municipal data. It is structured around an Urban AI Seminar, a short intensive course called Open Walks Seoul, and a capstone project in which students will develop policy proposals around city problems.
From seminar to fieldwork
The foundation held the first seminar on June 23 for 50 university students. According to Yonhap and ETNews, MIT researchers presented examples of applying data analysis to urban safety, pedestrian environments and city economics.
A second stage ran from July 13 through July 16 for 25 students from institutions including Seoul National University, KAIST and Yonsei University. Participants collected and analyzed data in central Seoul and presented team projects. The Korea Times reported that the course was led by researchers connected to MIT Senseable City Lab, KAIST and Harvard.
A fall capstone using city data
The next stage is a capstone for 10 selected students. The foundation says participants will work with Seoul Metropolitan Government data, identify urban problems and develop proposed technical or policy responses with guidance from MIT researchers. The work is scheduled to be presented at the Seoul Urban AI Forum during Smart Life Week in October.
The training builds on the February opening of Senseable City Seoul, MIT Senseable City Lab's fourth international research location and its first in Asia. Seoul's official announcement described that center as a hub for applied research in transportation, environment, safety and public-space use.
