Quali Drone Performs Contact-Free Turbine Blade Inspection

Quali Drone, together with RWE, Statkraft, TotalEnergies, DTU and Energy Cluster Denmark, completed the first autonomous contact-free inspection of an operational offshore wind turbine blade under the AQUADA-GO project at Rødsand 2. The drone used visual cameras, thermography and AI-based deep learning to detect surface and subsurface defects in real time. The approach aims to avoid turbine shutdowns, reducing downtime, costs and CO2 emissions while improving safety.
Key Points
- 1Completed autonomous contact-free inspection of operational offshore turbine blades at Rødsand 2 using Quali Drone technology
- 2Reduces downtime and safety risks by avoiding turbine shutdowns, lowering inspection costs and CO2 emissions
- 3Enables practitioners to integrate thermography and AI-based deep-learning models for real-time blade defect detection
Scoring Rationale
High novelty and real-world validation across major industry partners, but scope limited to offshore wind operations.
