North-West University Adopts First South African AI Policy
North-West University (NWU) has become the first South African university to adopt an official AI policy, the university said on Monday, establishing a human-centred, ethical and sustainable framework for AI use across teaching, research, assessment and university management. Professor Anné Verhoef said the policy defines governance, roles and responsibilities, creates an AI Steering Committee with reporting lines, and followed extensive faculty and Senate consultations before Council approval.
