NordSpace Secures NRC Funding For Engine Manufacturing

Markham-based NordSpace announced on Thursday it will receive up to $335,000 and advisory support from the National Research Council's Industrial Research Assistance Program to advance 3D-printing capabilities for its Hadfield medium-lift rocket engine. The Canada–Germany project pairs NordSpace with Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology and AI software firm SWMS to apply laser-based additive manufacturing and production planning. NordSpace says the work will support scaling toward a 5,000 kg-to-LEO medium-lift Titan by the early 2030s.
Key Points
- 1Secures $335,000 NRC IRAP grant to improve additive manufacturing for Hadfield medium-lift rocket engines.
- 2Partners with Fraunhofer and SWMS to combine laser-based 3D printing and AI production planning.
- 3Enables scaling from light to medium-lift vehicles, targeting 5,000 kg to LEO by early 2030s.
Scoring Rationale
Official government funding and credible partners drive relevance; limited novelty and narrow industry scope constrain impact.
