MIT Hosts Raman Spectroscopy Workshop Demonstrating Applications
In late January at MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms, postdoc Lamyaa Almehmadi led an IAP workshop teaching Raman spectroscopy to about a dozen students and staff, featuring handheld analyzers and a CSAIL robot dog demonstrating remote sensing. The session showcased how miniaturized Raman devices enable non-destructive, rapid material identification used in law enforcement, pharmaceuticals, and art restoration, signaling cross-disciplinary applications.
Scoring Rationale
Practical MIT demonstration highlights portable Raman potential; limited novelty and small-scale workshop constrain immediate widespread impact.
