Micron Starts Commercial Semiconductor Production in India

US chipmaker Micron Technology will commence commercial semiconductor production from its Gujarat ATMP facility by the end of February, Indian IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at Davos. Pilot production has already begun at approved facilities; the Sanand plant is a 50‑acre back-end assembly, testing, marking and packaging unit built under a $2.75 billion India Semiconductor Mission investment. The project aims to scale India’s domestic chip manufacturing capacity.
Key Points
- 1Announces start of commercial production at Micron's Gujarat ATMP facility by end of February
- 2Highlights $2.75 billion India Semiconductor Mission investment to build large back-end packaging plant
- 3Signals increased domestic manufacturing capacity, enabling local supply chains and memory module production scale-up
Scoring Rationale
Confirmed government-backed production timeline and $2.75B investment boost industry relevance; limited technical novelty and regional scope constrain impact.
