Meta said earlier this week it is ending its effort to add end-to-end encryption to Instagram direct messages after reporting very low opt-in rates, and will remove the option in coming months. The change follows Sara Su's August 2022 announcement of a test and Messenger's shift to default E2E in December 2023; Meta directs users to WhatsApp for encrypted messaging.
