India Installs Nearly 55 Million Smart Meters

India has installed nearly 5.5 crore (55 million) smart electricity meters under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), Union Minister Shripad Yesso Naik said on Feb 24; RDSS launched in 2023 carries an outlay of Rs 3,03,758 crore for FY2021-22 to FY2025-26 and aims to install 20 crore meters to digitize power distribution. Smart meters provide high-resolution consumption data that the ministry says can enable AI-driven demand forecasting, load balancing, predictive maintenance and improved DISCOM financials.
Key Points
- 1Installed nearly 5.5 crore smart meters under RDSS, targeting a total of 20 crore installations.
- 2Enable high-resolution consumption data for AI-driven forecasting, feeder prediction, and predictive maintenance.
- 3Allow DISCOMs to reduce AT&C losses, optimize procurement, lower costs, and improve grid reliability.
Scoring Rationale
Official national rollout shows substantial scale and AI potential, limited by descriptive reporting without technical implementation details.
