DataDome Logs 9.1 Billion Meta AI Requests in Q2
DataDome says Meta-ExternalAgent and Meta-WebIndexer generated 9.1 billion requests across its network in Q2 2026, more than half of the 17.7 billion AI-agent requests it observed. The firm measured almost no referral traffic from those Meta agents, while ChatGPT accounted for 80–88% of monthly AI referrals. The figures describe DataDome's customer network, not the entire web.
DataDome recorded 17.7 billion AI-agent requests across its customer network in the second quarter of 2026, up 45% from 12.2 billion in Q1. Its July 16 report says Meta-ExternalAgent and Meta-WebIndexer together generated 9.1 billion of those requests, more than half of the measured total.
The two Meta agents showed different growth patterns. DataDome measured Meta-ExternalAgent rising 74% quarter over quarter, from 3.1 billion to 5.3 billion requests, while Meta-WebIndexer rose 163%, from 1.4 billion to 3.75 billion. In June, the web-indexing agent exceeded Meta-ExternalAgent's monthly volume for the first time.
Crawl volume did not translate into referrals
DataDome says those 9.1 billion Meta-agent requests produced almost no referral visits to the sites in its network. ChatGPT showed the opposite pattern: ChatGPT-User request volume fell 6% from Q1, while ChatGPT accounted for 80–88% of AI-driven referral traffic each month and its referrals grew 17% quarter over quarter.
TechRadar independently reported the findings on July 17 and highlighted the infrastructure tradeoff for publishers: automated requests consume bandwidth, logging and other resources, but the commercial value varies sharply by agent. The underlying measurements and interpretations still come from DataDome, a bot-management vendor, rather than from a neutral census of web traffic.
What operators can measure
For site and platform teams, the practical lesson is to separate agents by purpose and observed behavior instead of treating all AI traffic as one category. Training crawlers, indexing bots and live-answer fetchers can have different request patterns and different chances of producing a visit.
DataDome recommends agent-level classification, identity validation and behavioral monitoring. LDS interpretation: teams considering rate limits or access policies should first measure verified request volume, resource cost and referral outcomes in their own logs. DataDome's network covers more than 400 enterprises and analyzes large-scale traffic, but its customer mix may not represent an individual publisher or the wider web.
Key Points
- 1DataDome measured 9.1 billion Q2 requests from Meta-ExternalAgent and Meta-WebIndexer within a 17.7 billion-request AI-agent total.
- 2The report says Meta's agents produced almost no referral traffic, while ChatGPT delivered 80–88% of monthly AI referrals.
- 3The measurements cover DataDome's customer network, so operators should validate agent costs and referral value against their own logs.
Scoring Rationale
The report provides large-scale measurements of AI-agent traffic and referral behavior that are directly useful to publishers and infrastructure teams designing crawler policies. Its relevance is high, while its impact is moderated because the figures describe one vendor's customer network rather than the entire web.
