Chinese AI firms including Alibaba, Z.ai and Deepseek produce world-class open LLMs that rank near US proprietary models on LMArena, the ranking site. But reports say making money directly from open models is difficult, so Chinese companies focus on selling products and services that use LLMs; several firms appear to generate enough revenue to continue investing in development.
