ByteDance has reportedly established a top-level business unit focused on AI data and security, placing it alongside Seed, Flow, Douyin, and other major units, according to reporting by 36Kr. The unit is led by Wang Yinglei, also identified as Adam Wang, who previously oversaw platform responsibility and livestreaming at TikTok.
36Kr reported that the organization was formally integrated beginning in early June and is consolidating AI data teams that had been distributed across ByteDance. The company had not responded to 36Kr's request for comment at the time of publication.
Consolidating model-training data work
According to 36Kr, a precursor was a data team established in 2023 by TikTok founding-team member Fu Yue. That group initially had about 100 employees and supported TikTok, Dola, the overseas version of Doubao, and Seed before taking on data procurement and quality-control work for Seed's model training.
36Kr reported that the new unit also incorporates several previously separate groups, including ByteDance's DMC platform and personnel from Flow's AI Data Platform, or AIDP. The report said the organization and staffing were still being clarified because the consolidation spans departments with overlapping responsibilities.
TechNode, citing Chinese reporting, described the department's work as covering data sourcing, synthetic-data generation, cleaning, standards, and quality evaluation for ByteDance foundation models. Its report calls the organization an AI data and safety department, while 36Kr describes it as an AI data and security unit.
