Apple Vision Pro Adds User-Created Immersive Photo Environments

At WWDC 2026, Apple previewed visionOS 27 features that let Vision Pro users turn their own panoramic and flat photos into immersive, surrounding environments, as part of the next generation of Apple Intelligence. Per Apple Newsroom (June 8, 2026), the features are available for developer testing now and will reach users this fall.

The capability builds on Spatial Reframing, an AI-driven Photos feature that Apple says uses generative models to fill in missing regions of a flat image - such as sky or ground - and to change viewpoint and depth for more convincing 3D scenes. Apple says it draws on the spatial understanding developed for Vision Pro; coverage (AppleInsider, Las Vegas Sun) reports it is also coming to Photos on iPhone with iOS 27, where users can touch and drag to reposition a shot.

Bringing generative, depth-aware editing into a mainstream headset and phone signals continued convergence of computational photography and immersive content creation. Practitioners will recognize the likely building blocks - depth estimation, novel-view synthesis and generative inpainting - though Apple has not published low-level technical details. The interesting questions are fidelity-related: how geometry and parallax hold up as a viewer moves their head, and how seams and occlusions are handled on complex panoramas.

Monitor the visionOS 27 and iOS 27 developer betas for artifact quality, whether processing runs on-device or via Apple's Private Cloud Compute, and any visionOS APIs that let developers author or export user-created environments for shared or social mixed-reality experiences.
