Antbird Study Reveals Multiple Distinct Species

Researchers Vagner Cavarzere et al. (2026) analyzed 682 museum specimens and 347 vocal recordings, including BirdNET classification, and determined that the gray antbird (Cercomacra cinerascens) comprises five distinct species. They describe two new taxa, Cercomacra mura and Cercomacra raucisona, occupying separate southern-Amazonian river-bounded regions. The findings implicate major Amazonian rivers as long-term barriers and inform targeted species recognition and conservation.
