Americans Prefer Individuals To Verify News Accuracy

Pew Research Center's Pew-Knight Initiative surveyed 3,560 U.S. adults Dec. 8–14, 2025, and ran nine June focus groups to study how Americans assess news accuracy and responsibility. It found 79% are at least somewhat confident they can check news accuracy (29% very confident), while only about 25% trust others' fact-checking ability (3% very confident). Forty-four percent say individuals should bear primary responsibility, with partisan differences on schools versus self-reliance.
