Wikimedia Seeks Payment From AI Firms

In 2025 the Wikimedia Foundation said rising infrastructure costs from industrial-scale scraping have driven it to seek paid licensing from AI companies. The foundation reported bandwidth for multimedia rose 50% since January 2024, bots caused 65% of the most expensive requests, and human traffic fell about 8% year-over-year after bot-detection updates. Wikimedia paused AI-generated summaries and founder Jimmy Wales urged firms to help cover costs.
