UK Appoints Kanishka Narayan as AI Minister

The July ministerial appointments release confirms three concrete points: the title of the role, its two host departments, and Narayan's attendance at Cabinet. The separate government role page confirms the 20 July appointment but does not yet publish a detailed list of responsibilities.

That distinction matters. Cabinet attendance gives AI a named political representative in senior government discussions, but the retrieved official pages do not assign specific files such as AI safety, online safety, semiconductors, public procurement or research funding to Narayan. Those responsibilities should not be inferred before the government publishes them.

NDTV independently reported the appointment as a newly created ministerial post. It also reported that Google DeepMind chief executive Demis Hassabis congratulated Narayan and that Narayan described a call with Hassabis about converting British AI advantages into jobs. Those comments indicate an early emphasis on the AI economy, but they are not a formal policy programme.
