Trai Imposes Termination Charge On Robocalls

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) proposed draft TCCCPR amendments on Friday to levy a 5 paise per-minute termination charge on A2P robocalls originating outside 1400/1600 numbers and to penalize improper SMS headers, inviting comments by 12 April 2026. The regulator also mandates AI/ML-based spam detection, faster sender re-verification and lower complaint thresholds to accelerate enforcement.
Scoring Rationale
Regulatory proposal introduces concrete enforcement and AI detection, but its scope and novelty are limited to Indian telecom operations.
