Sparc Partners With AIML To Modernize Coatings Assessment

Sparc Technologies has partnered with the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) at the University of Adelaide to co-develop AI software modernising protective coatings performance assessment, the companies said. A pilot under ISO 12944 demonstrated proof-of-concept using a large historical dataset, and Sparc estimates an ~850-laboratory addressable market while targeting third-party beta testing within 12 months.
Key Points
- 1Develops AI vision models to automatically detect corrosion boundaries and coating disbondment under ISO 12944 testing.
- 2Reduces subjective, labour-intensive scribe-based assessments, improving accuracy, consistency, and throughput from 40 minutes to seconds.
- 3Enables large-scale data capture and statistical analysis; targets beta trials in third-party labs within 12 months.
Scoring Rationale
Practical PoC with commercialisation pathway and credible partners; limited novelty and narrow industry scope reduce broader impact.
